Journalism adviser Stephen Green first in Conroe ISD to win Region Teacher of the Year

Caney Creek High School journalism adviser Stephen Green was 14 when he first sat in his high school journalism 1 class at Little-Cypress Mauriceville High School. That’s when he got his first assignment.
On his paper by the end was a jumbled, unstructured, mess of random facts strung together with bullet points; it could hardly be called an editorial. Through the seams of that choppy list, was a spark of passion. He had only taken journalism because his friends were. But Green found a connecti...

Splendora trustees buy land near proposed school site

“I have absolutely no problem with people buying land and making money,” Verron said. “The way it looks to me is that you took your inside information from being on the board before anybody knew about it and took advantage of being on the board and knowing that information and purchased land, because you knew that land was going to double (in value) when the school bought the property.”

New high school would cure some, not all, Oak Ridge overcrowding

A 382-page demographic study by Population and Survey Analysts released in January projects Oak Ridge High School will grow by 43 percent, or 1,600 students, over the next 10 years due to several planned major residential developments in the southeast region of Conroe ISD. The growth would exceed the campus’ capacity by 41 percent. However, ORHS will have capacity problems well before 2024 with projections showing at least 4,500 students on campus by as early as 2019.

Home is where the heart and school are

Addy DeDominicis tosses the “multiplication ball” back to her brother, Nick, at their home in Huntsville. Written on the ball is a mixture of single-digit numbers and the children multiply the numbers their thumbs land on before throwing the ball back. Homeschooling has given the DeDominicises a chance to become creative with how their kids learn and grow, giving them freedom to push boundaries.

What it’s like taking the STAAR

I left high school in May 2010 fairly certain I would not take a standardized test again. Not only have I done so, but I did it voluntarily. As The Item’s education reporter, I felt the need to take the test that is plaguing students not just in Huntsville ISD, but across the state. Passing rates from the TAKS test, which is what I took in high school, were in the 90 percentile for the most part. Now passing rates across the state on the new STAAR Test are in the 70, 60, and even 50 percentile. N...
